Speed is a word that seems to be related to motor car racing and the speeds that those cars reach on the tracks are quite staggering. The on-board cameras show the drivers battling to hold the wheel steady as the cars scream along and it looks quite intimidating. As much as we all fancy ourselves as speed merchants, few of us would like to be in the seat of a Formula 1 car traveling at over 200 miles an hour.
Other speeds were in evidence on the TV this week. The IAAF World Championships in Athletics at Osaka in August provided some interesting spectacles. The fastest man in the world is American Tyson Gay, who clocked 9.85 seconds in the 100 meters, meaning a speed of 36.5 kilometers and hour or 22.68 miles per hour. Fast as Gay ran, I remember many years back to my schooldays where the math teacher asked us to do this calculation and the answer then was also 22 miles per hour. The time has decreased fractionally but in athletics every hundredth of a second counts.
Another speed fact that raised many eyebrows was recorded at the US Open Tennis Tournament
