It's US Open Tennis TIme Again!

May 15, 2008 / by mootley

The US Tennis Open is in full swing. What a pleasure it is to sit and watch these men and women hammering that small yellow ball around the court! For us TV sportsmen, the US Open Tennis is one of the highlights of the year. Not only is it one of the most exciting spectator sports but it contains thrills, excitement and glamour.

The masters are still masters. Federer looks unconquerable, Nadal looks unpredictable but always wins on the way to the final and Andy Roddick is holding his own so far. This year's new ?find?, the almost 7 foot tall John Isner enjoyed himself in his game against Federer.  ?That was by far the most fun I've had playing a tennis match. Especially after winning the first set. The feeling of beating Roger Federer in a set, sitting down it was crazy?. Height clearly has something to do with winning at tennis. Isner registered a 140 mph serve against Federer and has been a hit on the tour, reaching the final this summer in Washington where he won five matches, all in final set tiebreaks, before falling to Andy Roddick in the final.

In the women's tennis, Maria Sharapova was an early casualty. I don't miss her on-court shrieking every time she hits the ball, but I do miss the glamour and watching her total dedication to winning. Last night's mammoth struggle between Ferrer and Nalbandian will go down as one of the highlights of the tournament - there cannot be many games that are cliff-hangers until the last ball is served.

This year there were 36 entries from the US, 28 from France, 26 from Russia, 19 from Germany and 16 from Spain. The prize money totals almost $20 million and the main prizes are awarded as follows:

Winners            1,400,000

Runners-Up      700,000

Semifinalists      300,000

Quarterfinalists 150,000
