Tiger's Miracle Shot

April 23, 2008 / by mootley

Can a golf shot make history? Golf is usually a sport with a very specific following. Most of the sporting public does not follow golf and would be bored stiff watching a golf tournament on television. Yet with a single shot, Tiger Woods changed all that and gets credited with one of the ten most significant moments in sports history.

The year was 2001 and the tournament was the Masters. To clinch victory, Tiger had to make a shot that would have taken even the best golfers three strokes. The ball was in the rough about 50 meters from the whole. The green was uneven, with a significant slop to the left of the cup. If he undershot, the ball would have rolled back down into the rough and destroyed Tiger's shot at a master's victory. On the other hand, with just a tiny bit too much force, the ball would have rolled down the slope, past the cup, and into a sand bunker. It was an impossible situation.

Tiger measured it up. He took a few practice swings and then tapped the ball. The enormous crowd that had gathered fell silent. Everyone held their breath and watched the ball slowly make its way up the hill. It hit the rise, turned and started every so slowly making its way back toward the cup. The television camera showed a close-up and the ball was rolling so slowly, you could count the dimples on the ball. Just as it hit the rim of the cup, it stopped for a full second. Then, as the astonished crowd looked on, it fell in.

The place went wild. No one could believe the shot. Over and over again the news replayed the shot. Today, if you go on YouTube and search for Tiger Woods miracle shot, you can watch it.

Tiger went on to win the Masters and many more major tournaments. But that shot may have just been the finest in the history of golf.
